About Us
ABLE Environments was founded by two John L. Scott Realtors®, Tom Minty and Rick Spellman. Between the two of them they have a combined experience of over 50 years in the sales and service industry. The concept of the need for finding or creating housing for special needs came from a conversation that Tom Minty had with a very dear friend who had become progressively less mobile suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She had asked if we often found accessible housing. We immediately used the industry resources to try and find those houses and found that the results were disappointing to say the least. Having no standards as to precisely what constituted “Disabled Access” the interpretation was broadly used and although without malice, what most Realtors considered accessible was anything but.
The more we researched and interviewed people, the more we realized that there was a tremendous need being unfulfilled in the Real Estate industry. We also discovered that even though there were many companies filling needs in this area, none of them pulled the beginning-to-end requirements together and most did a poor job of even suggesting what those different pieces might be. We wanted to be the single point of contact to help make this process as trouble free and successful as possible.
Being a part of the coming Baby Boomers ourselves, We quickly recognized the logic and value of creating a living environment that fit the needs of aging in place. Working with the designers, builders, remodelers and services industry to promote and encourage the use of Universal Design wherever we could became our objective.
